My Scoliosis Story

Hello everyone, it's Simone here. As a co-founder of Pillow Pod, I am passionate about improving the sleep experience for those who struggle with scoliosis and spinal fusion. Having battled with scoliosis myself for over a decade, I understand the challenges that come with the condition. When I was diagnosed in 2012, my scoliosis had already progressed to such an extent that I required spinal fusion surgery the following year. As a 13-year-old, this was an extremely scary time for me, my operation lasted 9.5 hours and the road to recovery seemed never ending. With a fusion spanning from T2 to L3 consisting of 2 titanium rods and 27 screws, I was left with limited mobility in my back and a long scar. One of the most challenging aspects of my recovery was getting enough sleep. That's why I'm determined to help others who are going through a similar experience get a better night's sleep.

My Sleep Struggles After Spinal Fusion

After my spinal fusion surgery, getting a good night's sleep became my biggest struggle. Sleeping on my back was incredibly painful, and the only way I could find any comfort was by sleeping on my side. However, I didn't have anything sturdy enough to support me on my side all night long. As a result, I had to resort to sleeping on the couch for months after my surgery, using the back of the couch for support while lying on my side. It was a frustrating and emotional experience as I was in so much pain and would often stay up all night, wishing for sleep to come. As a 13-year-old, this was a very traumatic experience. For years, I wished there was a better solution, so others with scoliosis and spinal fusion wouldn't have to go through the same bad sleep experience that I did. That's why I co-founded Pillow Pod, to help people like me who have back pain or other medical conditions that make it hard to sleep, get the sleep that the deserve.

Best Sleeping Position for Scoliosis and Spinal Fusion

Research has shown that sleeping on your side can be beneficial for those recovering from spinal fusion surgery. According to a study published in the Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Research, sleeping on your back can increase pressure on the fused area, leading to pain and discomfort. In contrast, side-sleeping has been found to reduce pressure on the fused area and improve spinal alignment, leading to better circulation and reduced pain during the night.
