My Scoliosis & Spinal Fusion Story

Hi, I’m Simone, co-founder of Pillow Pod and someone who truly understands how difficult sleep can be with scoliosis and spinal fusion.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis in 2012, and by the following year my curve had progressed so severely that I required spinal fusion surgery at just 13 years old. My operation lasted 9.5 hours and resulted in a fusion from T2 to L3, supported by two titanium rods and 27 screws.

Recovery was long, painful, and emotionally overwhelming. With limited mobility and a long surgical scar, everyday comfort, especially sleep, felt almost impossible.

One of the hardest parts of my recovery was simply getting enough rest.

My Sleep Struggles After Spinal Fusion

After surgery, sleeping on my back was unbearable. The pressure caused intense pain, leaving side-sleeping as my only option. However, I didn’t have the right support to stay comfortably on my side throughout the night.

For months, I slept on the couch, using the backrest as makeshift support just to stop myself rolling or collapsing forward. Nights were long, painful, and emotional. I often stayed awake wishing sleep would come.

That experience stayed with me for years and it’s exactly why Pillow Pod exists today. No one recovering from scoliosis or spinal fusion should have to go through that kind of sleeplessness.

Best Sleeping Position for Scoliosis and Spinal Fusion

Research shows that side-sleeping can be especially beneficial for those recovering from spinal fusion surgery.

According to a study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, sleeping on your back can increase pressure on the fused area, leading to pain and discomfort. In contrast, side-sleeping may reduce pressure, improve spinal alignment, enhance circulation, and reduce pain throughout the night.
